Dionysiou Areopagitou Street

Strolling along Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, a pedestrian road named after the first Athenian Christian, you’ll encounter early 20th-century mansions with a view of the Acropolis, a monumental symbol of the architecture and sculpture from the ancient Golden Age.

Theatre of Dionysus

On the southern slope of the Acropolis lies the Theatre of Dionysus, which was part of the sanctuary dedicated to Dionysus the Liberator. It is considered the world’s first theatre, where the City Dionysia, the greatest theatrical festival of ancient Athens, was held. Most ancient Greek tragedies and comedies were written to be performed here.

Herodes Atticus Theatre

A semicircular theatre made of Pentelic marble with 5,000 seats, built during the Roman period in memory of Herodes Atticus’ wife. The theatre is designed for musical performances, hence it’s called an Odeon. Every year, from May to October, renowned artists perform here, enchanted by the venue’s exceptional acoustics.

Temple of Olympian Zeus

Construction of the temple began in the 6th century BC and was completed 650 years later in the 2nd century AD. Over the centuries, the temple was systematically quarried to provide materials for the houses and churches of medieval Athens. In June 2001, Vangelis Papathanassiou performed “Mythodea,” an ode to the gods for NASA’s Mars mission.
