Leonidas Monument

Meteora
Meteora, meaning “suspended in the air,” consists of towering rock formations created 25-30 million years ago when this region was covered by a lake. It is home to one of the largest and most dramatically perched complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries. Many of these monasteries still use aerial lifts for transporting people and goods.
City of Kalampaka
Kalampaka, a name derived from the Turkish language meaning “powerful fortress,” was a significant commercial hub during the Turkish occupation. The city was known for its high-quality cotton and silk production and trade. Kalampaka also boasts a National History Museum of Meteora, a Mushroom Museum, and a Museum of Greek Education.

Kastraki
A village en route to Meteora, Kastraki is famous for the local tradition of young men climbing to the Monastery of Agios Georgios, which is built into a rock indentation. Once a year, they hang scarves there to honor the saint and to wish for good health.
Theopetra Cave
Theopetra Cave is a prehistoric site with one of the longest archaeological sequences in Greece, encompassing cultural remains from the Middle and Upper Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic periods. This site offers insights into the evolution of humanity, marking the critical transition from Neanderthals to Homo sapiens.
